March 5 – May 2, 2014
For painter Dennis Aufiery, social and cultural issues, identity and the individual human condition are subjects as much as composition. Power, time, desire, loss, ambiguity, the environment are all mixed in his work. These concepts flow concurrently with ideas about color and form. Beautiful color can be used to seduce the viewer, but the image, subject, or the way it’s painted can create doubt.
“So there is always a struggle between the sheer joy of painting and the meaning of the painting. People look to art to understand their own identity and the times we live in. Those things are always changing. At the same time there is a primal core that cuts through changing tastes.”
